Outdoor Fall Fire Safety with Katie

By Katie Bower, Bower Power

Crispy fall air is creeping into our lives. As much as I would love to say I want summer year long, I am willing to ditch the long days, popsicles and sand between my toes for the beauty of the leaves, cute boots, scarves, and apple dumplings faster than a Disney movie character breaks out into song. Plus, October is pretty special…it’s our anniversary month. Love is in the air! And so is the smell of burning leaves. Which leads me to my point today…October is also fire safety month. Didcha know that one?

And fire safety is near and dear to my heart for a few reasons. My brother was a volunteer fireman in his town. In college, our main administration building burned to the ground as we students huddled outside in the cold thankful that nobody was inside. And, when I began dating my darling boytoy, we may or may not have set fire to a lake. Thankfully water doesn’t stay on fire very long. But that’s a story for another day. The point is, now that I am a mom, fire safety is a major concern. And I wanted to share some of the ways that we are trying our best to keep our family and home safe from the risk of fires.

There are a million tips I am sure are vital to complete fire safety when partying in the great outdoors…but hopefully the one’s I’ll be sharing can get you thinking (and remind me!) of how important and how serious this issue really is. Here are some other great sites that can help keep your home and family safe:

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

U.S. Fire Administration

National Fire Safety Council, Inc. (NFSC)
